In unserer Vorstellung ähnelt der Park den Everglades oder dem Okefenokee Sumpf in Florida. Dunkler Urwald, Mangroven, Schlingpflanzen, Sümpfe mit Wasserwegen, Krokodilen und exotischen Vögeln. Dazu die bekannten Felsmalereien. Ja, chasch dänke! Voll daneben! Schon die Anfahrt gibt uns zu denken. Savanne und vereinzelte Bäume, helle, grüne Wasserflächen mit Lotusblumen und Seerosen, dann wieder viel Staub und rote Erde. Die Grenze zum Nationalpark macht auch keinen Unterschied. Drei grosse Flussläufe, die alle Alligator River heissen durchziehen diese Landschaft. Das gibt schon zu denken. Auch das Park Infozentrum zeigt keine Annäherung an unsere Phantasie, also weg damit. Wir stellen uns auf die Wirklichkeit ein. Der Park gehört den Aborigine und wird von ihnen zusammen mit der staatlichen Parkverwaltung geführt. Bei den weltberühmten Felszeichnungen von Ubirr und Nourlangie werden an den einzelnen Orten Rangertalks angeboten. Die Ranger erläutern die Zeichnungen, das Land, das Leben der Aborigine, ihre Lebensart, Vorstellungen und Art das Land zu sehen. Wir begleiten die Ranger von früh morgens bis Mitte Vormittag, dann ist Pause, weil es viel zu heiss wird, und lernen viel Neues. Wir beginnen langsam zu verstehen, dass Aborigines das Land nicht als Besitz sondern als Mutter und Geberin aller Dinge ansehen. Sie fühlen sich nicht als Besitzer, sondern als Sorgfalts-Pfleger und Betreuer des Landes. Viele Orte und Formationen haben ihre eigene Geschichte und sind manchmal Ruheorte von guten oder bösen Gewalten. Von Ubirr aus kann man den Sitz des Blitzes und Donners in der nahen Felskette sehen. Diesen Ort stört man nicht ungestraft. Unvorstellbare Desaster könnten über das Land hinweg ziehen. Dasselbe gilt für eine Ruhestätte der Regenbogenschlange in der Katherine Gorge, die Erdbeben, Fluten und anderes Ungemach über die Menschheit bringen kann, wenn man sie stört.
Auf der anderen Seite des Sitzes von Blitz und Donner haben die Aborigine seit Urzeiten ein Gebiet als ungesund und krankmachend erklärt, das nicht betreten wird. Heute weiss man, dass dort eine der grössten und reinsten Uranvorkommen liegt. Eine französische Firma möchte das Uran abbauen und hat dem Oberhaupt des Clans das für diese Gebiet zuständig ist 3 Milliarden Dollar für die Schürfrechte geboten. Er hat abgelehnt. Das Land hat eine andere Bedeutung für ihn und kann nicht mit Geld aufgewertet werden.

Kakadu National Park
We expect the park to resemble the Everglades or the Okefenokee swamp in Florida. Dark rainforest, Mangroves, huge vines, swamps with little waterways, crocodiles and exotic birds. In addition the world famous aborigine rock paintings. Not bl... likely! FAr from it. Already the drive towards the park gives food for thought. Savanna and single trees, light green ponds and lakes with lotus flowers and water lillies, and red earth with a lot of dust. No change when we enter the park. Three large rivers which are all called Alligator river, flow through the park. Not even the park info centre caters for our imagination, well, we better discard it then and accept the reality. The park is owned by the Aborigines but is run jointly with the governmental park services. At the world heritage rock art sites at Ubirr and Nourlangie, Park ranger give informative talks at the various sites. They expain the paintings, the country, the life of the Aborigines, their culture and way of living and their way to see the country. We follow the ranger from early in the morning to midday, then there is a break until late in the afternoon because of the heat.. We learn a lot of new things and start slowly to understand, the way Aborigines look at the country. They do not see themselves as the owner of the land but its caretaker. The country is the mother and giver of all things. Many places and formations have their own story and are sacred. The land and its trees, rocks, animals plants and rivers are alive and are sometimes resting places for mighty and big creator beings. From Ubirr we can see the seat of thunder and lightning in the rock formation on the near Mountains. This formation is not be disturbed on penalty of very harsh punishment for the whole country. Unimaginable disaster could befall the land. The same is true for the resting place of the rainbow serpent in the nearby Katherine Gorge. Earthquakes, floods and other disasters could come over mankind if it is disturbed.
On the other side of the seat of thunder and lightning the Aborigines have declared an area as unhealthy since time immemorial. Nobody is allowed to go there. Today it is known, that one of the largest Uranium sites lies there. A French consortium offered the owner clan 3 billion dollars for the right to open a mine there, they declined. Country has another significance for Aborigines and can not be bought with money.
